Gywddil Ben (Dewi Jenkins)

Bred and trained by Dewi Jenkins, Gwyddil Ben is phenomenal working dog. At just 12 months old, Ben, sired by Dewi’s Clwyd Bob, was sold at auction for over $24,000 in 2023.

Ben is an eye-catching smooth-coated dog, an excellent outrunner with plenty of forward gear, used for moving large numbers of sheep (and cattle). Dewi says, “Ben has a big engine and will run and work all day no problem, an excellent prospect for nursery trials with his correct flanks, and a 100% temperament.”

Ben is what I personally look for in working dogs: good listener, gritty, pushy, smart and bold. It is absolutely amazing what this full-trained dog could do at just 12 months old.

I took 3 doses of Ben from Dewi before he sold him. I will breed with 2 doses. The 3rd is being offered for sale, a one-time shot [pun intended] for those who like/breed first class working dogs and want to gear-up their breeding program.

In addition to Dewi Jenkins’ lines, Ben has some notable contributions on the dam site. Pat Byrne does not trial, but both the dam’s grandsires, Moss and Jim, are very good dogs. You can find videos of them online.

Welsh sheepdog Gwyddil Ben, sells for £18,100 at Skipton
9th March 2023

TOP dog on price by a country mile at £18,100 at Skipton Auction Mart’s March timed online-only sale of working sheepdogs was leading Welsh handler and triallist, Dewi Jenkins, of Tynygraig, Ceredigion.

Dewi, a frequent price topper at the North Yorkshire venue, both at live and online sales, far eclipsed his £7,000 top price at the previous online sale last December with his black and white dog, Gwyddil Ben, a 12-month-old son of Clwyd Bob, himself by the handler’s main stud dog Jock, the reigning 2022 International Supreme Champion, and with whom he also represented Wales at last year’s BBC One Man and His Dog final.

The 2016-born Clwyd Bob has exceptional bloodlines going back to multiple champions on both sides, among them on the grand dam’s side former International Supreme Champion Glencregg Silver. Ben’s own dam is Malta Jill, acquired by Dewi from Carlaine Thom, of Malta Border Collies, based in Co Tyrone, Northern Ireland.

After being mated a home to Clwyd Bob, now increasingly proving an exceptional stud dog, Jill then sold in-pup to friend and fellow Welshman T Davies carrying both Ben and litter sister Bess. Ben returned at eight weeks old to Dewi, who reports that Bess is due to be sold at Skipton this May.
