A beautiful female pup with a gorgeous nature, named Fern, is a singleton working collie pup born to Jazz and Peter (?).

Jazz surprised me one night by scratching at her kennel floor …a behavior I recognize instinctively. I quickly prepared a whelping den. Hours later, young Fern was delivered …but only Fern. She is a rare singleton. That is why I didn’t spot anything different in Jazz. Fern was normal sized. Singletons are often extra large, because there is just one.

Surprises happen. And they can have the most wonderful outcomes. Fern is one of them. She is beautiful on the inside and the outside. She is in a word …lovely.

Jazz held her pup close and because puppies just kind of crawl around for the first 2 weeks, I didn’t notice for over a week that young Fern had been born with a left leg that stopped at the knee. Everything looked so ‘normal’

Puppies born with this kind of defect live 90+% normal lives. Their muscles and joints grow around a tripod existence. They walk, run, play, climb like their 4-legged complement. To them, having 3 legs is normal. When they are full grown, prosthetics are an option, but really there is no need. They have already adapted.

Dogs born with 3 legs are not going to be jumpers …but maybe that is a good thing.

At 5 weeks, Fern is not just walking and running but doing stairs. And enjoys playing with the 12 week old pups as they jostle her about playing the same games they play amongst themselves with Fern. Fern bounds out of her kennel every morning with excitement to go meet the day, running for the door and the dog action.

Because 90% is a challenge in an environment that requires 100%, I am offering Fern at no charge to a companion home, where she will be adored and lead a normal life, to a place where the stigma of having only 3 legs is a celebration of life and adaptation.

Fern has the warmest, most friendly personality. She is confident and resilient. She shines.

This is a super opportunity for those who like my breeding and rearing to get a pup who has all of that …and who is a little special in her physical allocation but a lot special in substance, temperament and identify.

Fern will be available at 10 weeks (middle to end of August), wormed, vaccinated twice, ready to meet the world.
