The English have an expression, a ‘dog’s breakfast<\/strong>‘, referring to something that messy.
My daily dogs’ breakfast is a stack of fully consumed bowls, the mess is in the sink.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

I was in email correspondence with someone who took a dog and a pup from me last year. He was giving me their weights and showing me photos. Both dogs were overweight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Excess weight shortens a dog’s life and leads to early onset of osteoarthritis (as well as other diseases). It requires more effort to get weight taken off the older they get. So, try to get your dogs to ideal weight early and continue on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Portioning is most important. I know it is a challenge not to oblige the dog who asks for more. We love our pets and kids, and food is love …but not too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then comes selecting the right food. I got a stern talking to about the head of nutrition at a leading veterinary school for feeding what the professor of nutrition called a ’boutique diet’. I was told to stick to the “Big Three” manufacturers who have staff nutritionists to oversee the formulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is my reaction to that advice…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First…<\/strong> Kibble and processed foods are NOT the best diet for your dog. If I had the time, I would cook for my dogs -fresh, wholesome food. As a breeder, I simply have too many to do that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second…<\/strong> the Big Three sponsor vet schools and research and… and… and…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking at the most popular pet foods in the USA, there is mostly bad stuff out there. On the whole, the Big Three do have better food, but not exclusively. The Big Three are a good place to start, but do your own research as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For adult dogs, I recommend the Acana grain-free varieties: Poultry, Red Meat<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
